The Japan Times recently covered suspended the sister city relationship between the coastal towns of Broome, Western Australia and Taiji, in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Their ties date back at least 100 years in the fishing industry in Broome pearls. At that time, Broome was the largest pearl fishing center in the world, and worked there as many Japanese divers. Dive deep beneath the surface was the only option below to find the pearls. Divers risked large dangers to bring the oysters to the surface to find pearls in oyster shells.

A parasite can enter the oyster shell, and the oyster protects itself by creating layers of nacre around the parasites. The parasite changes and grows and, ultimately, a pearl forms inside an oyster. Today, however, pearls such as salmon and trout are farmed. A small, slightly rounded shell is inserted into an oyster. The oyster is returned to water and the pearl is slowly in the oyster shell. Pearl requires the formation of a few years.

Unlike silver, gold and diamonds, pearls do not need anything to be done. They leave from their shells and are ready for rings and necklaces. Before the cultivation of pearls, pearls, came from the sea. Divers dove on the ocean floor in search of oysters. Most divers in the fishing industry in Broome pearls were of Taiji. Between shark attacks and curves, diving was a very dangerous business. According to some sources, work killed about half of the divers.

The Japanese cemetery in Broome has the graves of 919 Japanese divers who died trying to take the riches of the sea. Other divers were lost at sea, their bodies were never found. When World War II began, divers were imprisoned in Japanese POW camps. Ironically, war probably saved many of their lives.

Taiji is a city of whaling for hundreds of years and the birthplace of hunting techniques traditional Japanese whaling. These techniques were developed in the 17th century, when presented Chubei Wada hunting group and a new handheld harpoon. Later, technique also net whaling was introduced. Hunting Party lasted several hundred years until an accident killed more than a hundred lives in 1878. Group game and then collapsed. Taiji suspended commercial whaling in 1988.

Today in Taiji, commercial hunting of dolphins is a major business. Some of the dolphins are sold to aquariums around the world. Other dolphins are slaughtered and sold to eat. Much of the dolphin is apparently eaten in Taiji and the media has told us about the high mercury content of dolphins and Taiji residents who consume them. Taiji has been subjected to domestic and international criticism and pressure to stop commercial whaling dolphins. Unfortunately, no acceptable alternative employment has been suggested for the residents of Taiji, which depend on the commercial hunting of dolphins to their income.

The town of Broome has recently been subject to both domestic and international criticism and pressure on the relationship of the city's sister city with Taiji. In late August This year, the local council of Broome suspended its relationship with its sister town of Taiji until it stops the commercial hunting of dolphins. Broome also has asked Australia and Taiji Japan to help in the development of alternatives. Broome hopes that the people of Taiji can earn a living otherwise, and the sister city relationship can resume.
